F.S. Cater Prize in Mathematical Sciences

Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Portland State University

The F.S. Cater Prize in Mathematical Sciences is awarded annually for outstanding academic achievements to students majoring in Mathematical Sciences. One such prize goes to an MA/MS in Mathematics student and one is awarded to an MS in Statistics student. The prize of $1500 each is awarded during the Spring term by the Chair of the department at the recommendation of the F.S. Cater Prize Committee. The recipients are honored at the annual departmental Graduation Reception. To be considered for the prize, students must be nominated by at least two faculty members of the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics on or before April 15.

The nominations should be send to the F.S. Cater Prize Committee, c/o Dr. Joyce O'Halloran, Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Portland State University.

The F.S. Cater Prize in Mathematical Sciences was established in 2004 by the generous gift from Dr. F.S. Cater, PSU Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences. Dr. Cater joined the Department of Mathematical Sciences in 1965 and retired as full professor in 1992. However, he is still very active in research, publishing regularly. He often comes by to visit and even attends departmental meetings.

F.S. Cater Prize recipients:

2005 - George A. Jacobs (MS in Math), Jin Wang (MS in Stat)
2006 - Hanqin Chen (MS in Stat), Nathan Lazar (MS in Math)
2007 - Rob Thompson (MS in Math), Venessa Wilson (MS in Stat)
2008 - Aaron Baraff (MS in Stat), John Powell (MS in Math)
2009 - Robert Benim (MS in Math), Jerzy Wieczorek (MS in Stat)
