Admission requirements

Master of Arts or Master of Science in Mathematics, Master of Science in Statistics, Master of Science in Teaching or Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics.

In addition to meeting the University admission requirements, students seeking regular admission status in master's programs are expected to have successfully completed courses in:

For M.A./M.S. in mathematics:  linear algebra, abstract algebra/group theory, introductory analysis/advanced calculus, and differential equations
For M.S. in statistics: basic statistical methods (stat 244 or higher), linear algebra, introductory analysis/advanced calculus, and differential equations
For M.A.T./M.S.T: linear algebra, abstract algebra/group theory, advanced calculus, and college geometry.

Please note that the introductory analysis/advanced calculus course listed above is a proof-based course - it is NOT part of the traditional calculus sequence.

The M.A./M.S. programs are designed for the student who wish to prepare for community college teaching, industrial work in mathematics or statistics, or further advanced work toward a Ph.D. in mathematics. The M.A.T./M.S.T. programs offer advanced training and specialized courses for secondary school teachers of mathematics.

Graduate Programs Application Information

When applying to a graduate program, one must submit two separate application packets – one to the Office of Admissions, and one to the Mathematics & Statistics Department (or to the Systems Science Department if applying to the Ph.D. in Systems Science/Mathematics). Please refer to the University Application for Graduate Admission to determine what is needed for the Office of Admissions packet (read the included information CAREFULLY). Applying online to the university still requires sending a 2nd packet to the Mathematics and Statistics Department.
See below for departmental application requirements:

For MA/MS Mathematics applicants, please include:
  1. Departmental Graduate Admission Application.
  2. Official transcript from each post-secondary institution you’ve attended.

For MS Statistics applicants, please include:
  1. Departmental Graduate Admission Application.
  2. Official transcript from each post-secondary institution you’ve attended.
  3. Two recommendation letters.

For MAT/MST applicants, please include:
