Departmental Honors Program Within the
BS/BA MATHMEMATICS DEGREE Department of Mathematics &
Statistics Portland State University
Initial placement in the Departmental Honors Program for the Mathematical
Sciences Degree will be determined by a conference between the student and one
of the two Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Advisers. At this time a schedule of
mathematics/statistics courses will be recommended.
Near the end of each academic year, a committee comprised of the department
UG advisers and the student's Thesis adviser (or any departmental faculty member
if a thesis adviser has not been chosen) will meet with the student to review
the student's progress and performance. If the progress and performance are
found to be satisfactory, the committee and student will plan a program for the
next academic year. If the student's progress and/or performance are found to be
unsatisfactory and if corrective actions cannot be identified, the student will
be dropped from the Honors Program in the Mathematical Sciences major. (The
student may opt to pursue a regular mathematical sciences major or to select
another major.)
Programs may vary widely depending upon the aptitudes and interests of the
student, however, all Honors Mathematical Sciences majors must satisfy the
following requirements:
-
Fulfillment of the regular undergraduate math major which would include
credit (or demonstrated competence ) in the following courses: Mth 251, 252,
253, 254, 256, 311, 312, 343, 344, 345 or 346 or 338, CS 161, and two approved
Mth/Stat electives. Also, credit in at least two approved 400-level sequences
chosen from the following sequences: Mth 411-412; Mth 421-422; Mth 424-425; Mth
431-432; Mth 435-436; Mth 441-442; Mth 444-445; Mth 451-452; Mth 467-468; Mth
470-471; Stat 461-62; Stat 465-466.
-
A thesis project.
-
The student must maintain a Mth/Stat grade point average no lower than 3.5.
No Mth/Stat courses taken under the undifferentiated grading option are
acceptable towards fulfilling the requirements for the Honors
Degree.
A student interested in pursuing an Honors Program in the Mathematical
Sciences major should see a Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Adviser for more information. Last Modified June 28, 2008
