| HW # | Problems Due | Due Date |
HW #1
- Show how to perform the addition 2/5 + 1/3, and ¾ + 5/6 using fraction bars.
Include sketches of the original numbers as fraction bars, and sketches of any steps you use.
Explain your steps briefly and keep your drawings to scale. (No need to cut out fraction bars. Sketches are sufficient.)
- Start reading Liping Ma article (read 8 to 10 pages a night... a page is 1/2 of one side). As you find interesting or confusing points,
mark them in the margins or on separate paper.
- Bring your workbook to class on Tuesday.
Tuesday, July 22nd
HW #2
- Choose 2 of the fraction models (take away, comparison, or missing addend) to show the subtraction : 2 and 5/6 minus 1 and 1/4.
Show separate work for each of the models. Include visuals and brief instructions.
- TB 5.2: (These are "basic skills" questions. They do not require long answers.
Generally the answer is a single number or a picture.) 6, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28
- Continue preparing fractions lesson to teach with small group on Wednesday.
(you will also have the first 20 min on Wednesday to prepare with your groups)
- Keep reading Liping Ma. Start thinking about your 1/2 page summary and 1/2 page opinion paper.
Wednesday, July 23rd
HW #3
- Finish reading Liping Ma article.
Read _all of_ the article (On division of fractions) from Liping Ma's book
"Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics." Write notes on what you think
as you read and to keep track of the flow of the article. Write in the margins
if it helps. When you have completed the reading, type a 1/2 page summary of
the article and a 1/2 page opinion paper on the article (single space, regular margins).
If you cannot think of enough opinions to fill 1/2 page, you can try asking a
teacher or two (outside our class) to answer the two questions the teachers
in the article were asked and write your opinions on their answers.
- In class on Thursday, we will have a discuss group on the Liping Ma article. If you have questions, please
bring them.

Which of these skills might benefit from “common denominators”, and which don’t? Justify your answer, with words and numbers, for each of the 5 skills.
- Fractions worksheet, handed out in class. (N.B. For problem 6, the "uphill both ways" is in jest and does
not affect the math.)
