Text:
Prerequisites: The prereqs for this course are Math 95 or its equivalent, and Math 211. Therefore, you should be familiar with problem solving, basic algebra, radicals and exponents, fractions, decimals, and order of operations.
Topics and Goals: Chapters 5-8: Fractions, proportional reasoning, decimals, statistics, and probability. There will be an underlying theme of problem solving in all of the topics we will cover.
The 211-213 sequence is not intended as an introduction to basic elementary math skills. The goal of this sequence of courses is to question and understand the structures of mathematics that support elementary mathematics.
Goals:
Disability Services: If you have a learning or physical disability and are in need of academic accommodations, please contact PSU’s Disability Services at 503-725-4150. They will determine any adjustments that need to be made for your individual needs.
Grading:

|
* You must earn a passing grade on the final exam in order to pass the course.
Attendance: There is a strong emphasis in this course on activity based learning. You will be constructing your knowledge of math concepts by doing activities in small groups in class. Regular attendance is essential. This term we will be doing an attendance sign in sheet each day. It is your responsibility to make sure you sign the attendance sheet. If you miss a class, you should arrange to get notes from a classmate.
Reading responses Any reading response or reflection that you turn in for this course should be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point "times" or similar font, with 1-inch margins on all sides. Pictures and diagrams may be hand-drawn. Please print out your responses and bring them to class when they are due. (Email submissions of responses/reflections are generally not accepted.) Further instructions will be given for each response/reflection.
Pen Pals Project: More information will be available later.
Quizzes: Rather than multiple midterms, we will have weekly quizzes this term.

Portfolios:
For this class, you will compile a portfolio that organizes most of the work you do
for the class. Any time you get any graded assignment back, it should go into your portfolio.
You should also put all the assigned homework problems into your portfolio.
The final portfolio is due at the beginning of Week 10. Your portfolio is worth 5% of your overall course grade, and it will be graded out of 20 points. The homework that has been assigned throughout the term will be worth 18 points, based on completion. The remaining 2 points will be based on the overall organization, timeliness, and completeness of your portfolio. What should the portfolio look like? Your porfolio should be a 3-ring binder that is large enough to hold the materials for all of the sections listed below. A divider should be labeled and placed at the front of each section. All documents in the binder should be 3-hole punched and appropriately filed.

Calculators: Calculators will be used occasionally in class. Before you use a calculator on your homework, ask yourself "Do I really need a calculator?" (The answer is often no.)
