TEXT: Set Theory and Metric Spaces 2nd Edition by Irving Kaplanksi

This course is an introduction to abstract set theory.  Students will be introduced to the Zermelo–Fraenkel axioms, along with the axiom of choice (ZFC), which are foundational to modern mathematics (Ref http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZFC).  We will work through the first two chapters of Kaplanski, finishing with the connections among the Axiom of Choice, Zorn's Lemma and the Continuum Hypothesis.   There will be at least one midterm (possibly two) and a cummulative final.  The course grade will depend on these exams and completed homework assignments.
