Assignment due Week 2:
Read the Gravemeijer Chapter and the Lesh et al. chapter. Be prepared to discuss both chapters in class next week.
Write a brief description of each article (for your own benefit)
(With your partner) Beginning Creating a Model Development Sequence designed to promote the learning of a math concept of your choosing (choose a concept/topic and brainstorm ideas about possible contexts and tasks).
Assignment due Week 3:
Read chapters 1-3 of the NCTM standards (Thru page 71).
Choose a standard and write a 1-2 page opinion piece dealing with the standard itself or the way the standard is (or is not) integrated into an actual education setting (nation, state, district, classroom, text book, or whatever else you want to talk about).
(With your partner) Create a model eliciting activity that is ready for testing in class. Try to make some progress toward developing the rest of your model development sequence (model exploration activity and model adaptation activity).
Assignment due Week 4:
Read chapters 4 & 5 of the NCTM standards (You can do it!!!!)
(With your partner) Create a Model Development Sequence (model eliciting activity - model exploration activity - model adaptation activity).
Write a 2+ page evaluation of the 1st and 3rd activities according to the six principles described in the Lesh et al. chapter.
Additional things to consider when writing your sequence
The second activity should be designed to build on the models developed by the students in the first activity in order to make these models more powerful for use in other contexts (e.g. by developing more powerful versions of the notations or representations used in their original models). Use whatever kind of approach you think is appropriate to meet this goal.
The model adaptation activity should be set in a different context from the model-eliciting activity.
Assignment due Week 5:
Prepare a selection from you handbook chapter to hand out.
Finish reading the standards
Assignments due Week 6:
Read the No Child Left Behind handout (from the Department of Education Site)
Visit the NPR site (link above0
Read the review of the IMP curriculum (handed out in class)
Assignment due Week 7:
Read your selected handbook chapter. Prepare a short presentation to give an overview of the chapter (5-10 minutes) and be prepared to lead a 10-15 minute discussion based on the selection of the chapter handed out in Week 5.
Read the selections from the other students chapters and be prepared to discuss them.
Turn in your 5-10 page paper on the Standards
Turn in your 4 page paper on your handbook chapter (about 50/50 summary and analysis)
Assignment due Week 8:
Read Chapter 27 from the handbook
NOTE CHANGE: Turn in 2 page paper on Chapter 27 (critical analysis)
Assignment due Week 9:
Reserved for now in case discussions go long in week 7
